Metamorphism and Formation Age of the Xiahe Group in the Zhaigen Area of North Qinling Belt

Abstract: The Xiahe Group is a low-grade metamorphic rock series mainly composed of clastic-volcanic-sedimentary sequences in the North Qinling belt. It exhibits distinct metamorphic characteristics differentiating it from the adjacent Qinling Complex. Despite this petrogenetic disparity, previous studies have commonly considered the Xiahe Group as part of the Qinling Complex, resulting in insufficient systematic research, especially metamorphic petrological stuides remain underexplored, which affects the understanding of the metamorphic characteristics, formation age, and tectonic evolution history of the Xiahe Group. In this study, geothermometers show that the Zhaigen Formation has generally undergone medium pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism at 5.5–7.5 kbar and 572–607 ℃, while the Jiepai Formation has undergone low-grade greenschist facies metamorphism at 1.6–2.6 kbar and 443–532 ℃. Detrital zircon U-Pb dating constrains the maximum sedimentary age of the Zhaigen Formation is ~1.0 Ga, while the maximum sedimentary age of the Jiepai Formation is~0.5 Ga. In addition, U-Pb dating of monazite in the garnet quartz schist from the Zhaigen Formation obtained three metamorphic age clusters: a near-peak metamorphic event at (475±3)Ma, followed by retrogressive metamorphism between 432–403 Ma. The obtained geochronological framework, coupled with the reconstructed prograde PT trajectory exhibiting simultaneous temperature-pressure increase, suggests the Zhaigen Formation underwent crustal thickening processes. This tectonothermal event likely corresponds to Early Paleozoic continental collision of the North Qinling belt. The Zhaigen and Jiepai Formations not be coexisting stratigraphic units, but more likely different slices that were juxtaposed during subduction and collision.
